Case study - York
Franchisee: Clarke Boulter
Location: York
Opened: 2003
Clarke started his Northwood franchise after a career in the Royal Marines. "Becoming my own boss has been a steep but enjoyable learning curve, the ongoing support from Northwood made the transition from the military to the civilian world very smooth, this is clear from the growth in our turnover which has increased by 50 per cent year-on-year despite the economic climate.
I decided to leave the Royal Marines after 18 years of service because I wanted to spend more time with my family. Throughout my career, I went on tour to Afghanistan and Iraq, which meant I was away from my family for up to nine months at a time. I decided to go down the route of franchising, as I wanted the challenge of running my own business, but with the safety net of a tried and tested business model that also gives you access to the ongoing training and support.
I was looking for a franchise with strong growth potential, property franchising ticked all the right boxes, in particular Northwood, not least because of its unique product; the Platinum Guaranteed Rental Income Scheme. I joined the Northwood network in September 2006 and my territory covers a generously large area across York and its surrounding villages.
The six-week training course I received covered everything I needed to know. The regular regional meetings allow franchisees to share their thoughts and ideas. The company’s ethos is very friendly and helpful and I know that the Franchise Office is just a phone call away for advice and guidance on any technical questions I might have.
As my own boss, I feel empowered, I am able to make the decisions, have control of my own future and of course my earning potential is unlimited. Being a small business owner is exciting and varied, you gain many freedoms that you simply would not experience in a corporate or military career."
